Do routes without Overlap step-up?

For example I set a route without an Overlap (where available) as there is a conflicting movement taking place.

The conflicting movement has passed clear or come to a stand with its overlap timed-out.

Before the train which had the No Overlap route set arrives I can set the next part of the route.

Does the original route step up to in effect a Route with Overlap or does the Driver still see a restricted aspect?

Hi Andrew,

as far as I have learned in this forum, a restriction (i.e. lower speed) given by the setting of a route will be still effective when the reason for the restriction has already disappeared.

So, if you don't want to give a restriction to an incoming train (and the train is still far away) you should wait until you can set the route completely without restriction.

A step up from a route with overlap restriction to a non-restrected route can only be peformed In new electronic signal boxes (ESTW) combined with special signals (KS-signals) in special situations.

In German we call this procedure "Aufsignalisierung".

Old signal boxes of Eastern Germany could also perform this in combination with Hl-signals.

With SpDr-signal boxes, this procedure won't be possible - once a signal has shown a movement order (whether it's restricted (Hp2) or not (Hp1)), it can only be changed to "stop" (Hp0).

It's the same situation when you set a route with overlap and cancel the overlap, but not the route. The signal will fall back to red and not to the movement order shown when a restricted route is set.

Thanks both for your responses and insight.

There is a particular reason for that:

In mechanical systems it was not possible anyway, and never needed, to upgrade he signal aspect.

In light aspect signal system there is a great danger in doing that. If a light aspect signal shows green over yellow to indicate "slow,40kmh", and the signal could upgrade to single green, "full speed allowed", a driver might consider the obscuring of the yellow light due to tree, catenary pole, platform roof etc, as an upgrade of the aspect and accelerate....

Hence upgrading of aspect is not allowed with older systems in Germany.

This is STILL possible with the new system Ks in Germany for exactly the case you mention. And very dangerous. If yellow would upgrade to green with white number to indicate speed....the driver may be expecting green only.... The number is obscured..... He accalerates to full speed.

All caused by poor design of the system.

The only system on the world that is safe against the correct observations in all cases is the Dutch signalling system.
